When we had our first meeting with Maryam & Kevin, I (Kate) actually yelled at them. Not normal behaviour for a first meeting, I admit. So I basically let out a shout of excitement upon learning that Maryam & Kevin's combined ethnic heritage is almost the same crazy mix as mine. (I was born in Ireland, and my mum's from India, but half Armenian...) Anyway it was super meaningful for me to witness this gorgeous Persian ceremony - and on top of that just seeing the way these two looked at each other, with all those big, beautiful, shining, hopeful eyes... *~melt~*

The Change of Seasons

I was out one night in the fall, for a friend's birthday, and next to us was a bachelorette party. It was quite a large group of sassy women in their early twenties (as I learned when our parties got to a-chatting together). The ladies were having a blast, dancing and laughing... and doing all the funny things women do at bachelorette parties in nightclubs. Anyway at one point my friend looked at me incredulously, and said, "You LOVE brides!" Apparently she derived this from my constant exclaims of delight, every time something exciting happened. "Look at the bride! Look what they're doing! Omigod, group dance - we should learn a group dance! Aw, look what they got her!"... and so on. And the truth is, my friend was right. I was happy for this bride and her fabulous party. I love weddings - there I said it. I just can't get sick of 'em.

One of the best things about being a wedding photographer, is that it is such a social profession. Every weekend we get to know a brand new posse of people, and spend an action-packed day together. It is uplifting to be in a room with a couple on one of the biggest days (emotionally, if not logistically) of their life - surrounded by their closest friends, family members, respected colleagues, and basically everyone they love. Imagine the emotion running through the air, the pride and excitement people feel as they see the folks they care for, finally coming together.

And we are lucky to be there too, to capture the moments. To spot the shining eyes, to hear the kind words spoken, and to witness the vows taken not only by the couple getting married, but often by their loved ones as well - promising to lend their support.

Rudo and I have had a busy year, and a great time meeting fascinating, hilarious, and lovely people.

As we move forward, I thank you again for sharing with us, and giving us the opportunity to be a part of your special day. You made us laugh and sometimes cry (okay, not Rudo, but I am generally a crier so...). We sweated and we froze together (depending on your wedding date); you fed us, and welcomed us into your homes, and made us feel like family; we consumed delicious coffee and food that was scrumptious.

We have made some new friends for life. Here's to many more good times ahead!

Even the Berlin Wall couldn't come between Canadian-born Meg and her German lover Jim! We crossed Am Oberbaum bridge into East Berlin on this cold January day and explored the amazing graffiti that covers Kreuzberg and Fredrichshain buildings from head to toe. The couple did their best to heat up the streets for us all ;)
I spent the month of January in Berlin. Despite the cold, the city was alive and kicking! I stayed with my good friend Meg and her posse of French artists, and I fell in love with the place. Thank you SO much for your hospitality my dears!! I can't wait to return. ~k

Happy Holidays from the Irish Sea!

As some of you may know, I (Kate) am in Dublin, Ireland, at the moment... and if you've been watching the news you'll have seen the chaos recently caused by the unusually cold and snowy weather over here! Well, this morning I witnessed what I was told is an old, Irish, Christmas Day tradition: a freezing cold dip in the sea!

We walked down to the sea front - the Dublin Bay to be specific - and caught some early birds going for a quick in and out. As the morning wore on more and more folks showed up, old and young alike, to take the plunge. Some people immersed themselves quickly then jumped out, shouting, head shaking, running into the arms (and towels) of family and friends. Yet there were some very hardy swimmers too! Some of the "all year rounders" actually did a few strokes, one man exclaiming with delight, "invigorating!" Upon emerging from the pool another elderly gent advised a his young companion, "Ah, there's a bit of a nip, there is." Then there were the onlookers, taking pictures, holding towels, wearing Santa hats, and passing around thermoses and flasks. All in all a jolly scene!

So, while this is our wedding photography blog (and I will be posting images from a beautiful Irish wedding soon!), I couldn't resist these images and their happy vibes as a way for Rudo and I to say

Ducks that Mate for Life

Shannon and Andrew came into Toronto for their engagement session. Upon arriving at the Brick Works, they suspected I had brought them to a construction site... until they discovered this haven of wilderness in the middle of Canada's urban centre.

This is why I am a wedding photographer: I love people, observing their movements, talking and laughing with them, creating energy. I love taking pictures, looking at the light, the movement, freezing the moment. I love seeing people in love - I believe there is an endless amount of it in the world, and being around love birds still puts a lump in my throat, and a flutter in my cheesy heart.

"We were blessed to have Rudo be our photographer at our wedding. We can tell from the first time we met him that he was passionate about his work. He is dedicated to his photography and will work hard to capture every special moment. We had a full wedding day that included a traditional chinese tea ceremony, and church ceremony as well as cocktails and reception, and Rudo's dedication to his work, to us and the day never faltered. We were very impressed by all the moments he was able to capture, and the work he did to artistically enhance and touch-up our photos. In the end, we found our photos to have a good mix of artistic shots as well as special moment shots.

It was a rainy day for a photo session, but that didn't stop us! Alan and Evan took me to their favourite pub, Murphy's Law for a few pints... Once the weather let up we wandered through the Brick Works, which is always beautiful. The misty atmosphere created the perfect light for portraits.

Brian and Josee had a small wedding in the pretty little town of Elora, best known for the Elora Gorge. The whole wedding took place at Drew House Bed & Breakfast. It was beautifully intimate, with an outdoor ceremony on the grounds, cocktails on the patio, and the most delicious vegetarian dinner I can remember followed by a night of dancing!

We have been so fortunate to meet the wonderful friends and couples that helped us get our business started. What began as shooting weddings for friends, then friends of friends, and so on... has bloomed into our beloved business.
